2009-10 Second Concert

Tchaikovsky & Prokofiev with prize winning cellist Michael Petrov
Oxford Town Hall
Saturday 6 February 2010 7:30pm
Prokofiev: Sinfonia Concertante
Tchaikovsky: Manfred Symphony
Robert Max conductor
Michael Petrov cello
Prokofiev's Sinfonia Concertante is a 'cello symphony' with a demanding solo cello part, poignant melodies and astringent orchestral colouring. Michael Petrov, who in 2009 won the The Guilhermina Suggia Gift for his competition performance of the Sinfonia Concertante, joins OSO to perform this great work and to receive a formal presentation of the Award. Michael Petrov takes the place of Natalie Clein who unfortunately is now unable to play in this concert.
Managed by the Musicians Benevolent Fund, the Guilhermina Suggia Gift is awarded to talented cellists under the age of 21 following competitive audition. It has been awarded to some of the world's foremost cellists including Jacqueline Du Pré, Steven Isserlis, Robert Cohen, Raphael Wallfisch, Julian Lloyd Webber and, more recently, to rising young cellists Guy Johnston and Bartholomew La Follette.
Tchaikovsky's Manfred Symphony dramatically illustrates the torments of Byron's mythical character. Composed between the fourth and fifth symphonies, the four movements of the Manfred Symphony include some of Tchaikovsky's finest melodies and most exciting orchestration.
